Drinking Battle

You spot Duke and Karen at the bar. Karen explains that Duke has run up a large tab at the general store, so the two of them are going to have a juice drinking battle. If Karen wins, Duke has to completely pay off his debt. But, if Duke wins, then the debt will be cleared and he'll owe nothing. Karen asks that you be the witness to their drinking contest.

Choice 1: This is stupid... (-2000 LP)

Karen insists that she's serious about this. You can just sit there and watch instead!

Choice 2: Sure thing. (+3000 LP)

Excellent! The two of them are now ready to start drinking.

Duke soon finds himself passed out on the floor, with Karen gloating over him. He couldn't beat her in a hundred years! Before Karen stumbles home, she tells Duke the she expects him to pay off his tab by the end of the day. Dudley asks that you escort Duke home, as he can't leave the inn else he'd do it himself.

You take Duke home, where he wakes up to Mana yelling at him. As he moans over his tummy ache, Manna tells him she heard the whole thing from you. Duke confirms he was trying to win the drinking contest, and asks here what the outcome was. Manna tells him that he lost. Duke doesn't mind though, as Karen is a tough challenger. That isn't the response Manna was expecting, as now they'll have to pay off his debt. Manna asks him what he has been secretly buying from the general store...

Due tells her it's nothing, and says he has to keep his promise to Karen. Manna tells him she'll take the debt out of his allowance. Mana tells him to apologize to you, and then she apologizes for her blockhead husband's behavior. Now Duke is upset at Manna for using such language, and the two of them start arguing back and forth.

The event ends at 11:00 pm.

The developers toned down this event compared to how it played out in the Gameboy Advanced game. The contest was originally referred to as a "drinking contest" (implying alcohol) and not a "juice" contest. After Karen's victory, her character portrait appears with flushed cheeks as though she was heavily intoxicated. In the Switch remake, Karen's victory portrait is just her standard, everyday artwork. Duke's post-contest ailments was a headache in the GBA game, while it is a tummy ache in the Switch remake.
