Cliff

A natural wanderer, Cliff moved from place to place in search of somewhere to belong. When you first move to Mineral Town, Cliff lives at the inn at night and hides in the church during the day, avoiding social interaction with the town residents. Carter is worried about the shy hermit and hopes that maybe you can become friends with Cliff. He won't talk much at first, but as you raise your friendship with Cliff he'll become more talkative.

During Autumn of your first year, an opportunity appears that could give Cliff a purpose in life by working at Duke's winery. It's up to you to invite Cliff to participate. If you keep it to yourself, Cliff will leave Mineral Town on Winter 29 of your first year.

Though, his absence is only temporary in the Switch remake of FoMT.

Introduction

Carter welcomes you as you enter the church. Would you listen to his request? He points out the young man sitting on the pew and tells you his name is Cliff. Carter asks if you would go over there and talk to him. Cliff also is a new resident of Mineral Town, but he doesn't communicate very well with other people. Cliff doesn't have the courage to talk to strangers. You agree to chat with Cliff for a bit.

You walk over and greet Cliff. The young man returns your greeting, but as you continue to stand there, asks if there is something on his face. Nope, you're just curious to get to know him better. Cliff tries to talk to you, but he is too nervous and can't really talk to someone one-on-one.

Choice 1: Pull yourself together, man! (-2000 LP)

Cliff doesn't want to give up, but this is too difficult. Now isn't the right time. Cliff asks that you leave him alone.

Choice 2: Take your time. (+3000 LP)

True, you seem to be calm. Cliff notes that you're a calming person and starts talking to you about how you came to town by yourself to run the old farm. He's impressed that you're able to grow crops and care for animals on your own; he could never do something like that. Cliff cheers up and says he'd like to talk to you again if you come visit the church.

Black Heart Event

Carter is glad to see you. He and Cliff were about to get some dinner, and Cliff asks if you would like to join them. Of course! Carter says that Ann will be bringing the food he ordered, but in the meantime can you and Cliff do a little bit of cleaning? He needs to stay in the confession booth for a while, so he leaves the two of you alone in the church.

Cliff says that he could do it himself and that you don't have to do any cleaning.

Choice 1: "Good, because I was about to say..." or "Then I'll kick back while you clean." (No FP/LP change with Cliff, -10 FP with Carter)

Ok, this won't take very long. Cliff asks that you wait outside.

You pace back and forth, waiting for Cliff to finish, when Ran comes running through. She apologizes for rushing into you. You explain you were invited for dinner, so you were waiting outside. Ran asks if you are friends with Cliff, as you seem to be the only other person he'll talk to besides Carter. She was a little worried, but if you're around then she doesn't think she has anything to worry about now.

Carter is glad to see that Ran has arrived with the food, just as Cliff had finished with his cleaning. What perfect timing! Cliff thanks Ran for the food, and thanks you for waiting outside.

Choice 2: "I'd like to help." or "It'll be good exercise." (+3000 LP, +20 FP with Carter)

Cliff thanks you for volunteering to clean. The two of you make quick work of tidying up the church. Once finished, Cliff figures the cleaning was just like if you were working on the farm, taking care of crops and animals. Having a hectic schedule ever day would result in knowing the best way to efficiently use one's time.

Ann arrives with the food from the inn. Now it's time for the three of you to eat dinner. Yum!

This event ends at 7:00 pm.

In the original GBA game, this event could be triggered before Cliff accepted the job at the winery by walking into the church at exactly 4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, or any rainy day, when Carter and Cliff would both be inside the main church room for a brief moment. Unfortunately, this trigger criteria doesn't appear to be carried over in the remake. Now Cliff only starts to visit the church at 5:00 pm after he begins working his day job at the winery.

Purple Heart Event

Cliff and Duke are in the vineyard finishing up their work for the day. Duke tells Cliff to take a break, and he won't take no for an answer! Manna is getting worried about how much work Cliff is putting in. While Cliff is a great worker, it would be bad if he collapsed from exhaustion.

Duke notices you walking by and calls you over. He tells Cliff to take you up to the summit of Mother's Hill. It's a great day to take in the view! Cliff would rather be working, but Duke tells him that his work is done for the day. Besides, Duke suggests that Cliff should reward you for helping him get the job. Cliff finally relents and complies with Duke's order.

At the summit, Cliff apologizes for Duke forcing him to take you to the mountain. He hopes that you aren't upset, but you're not bothered at all. Duke does have a point though; Cliff hasn't properly thanked you for your help. Cliff feels more comfortable since he started living in town. Little by little, he's been enjoying his work. Do you like your work too?

Choice 1: "Yo hoe, a farmer's life for me!" or "I think it's my calling." (+3000 LP)

Cliff is glad to hear that you enjoy your work. He likes his work too, as the fruit he harvests is used to make tasty drinks that people can enjoy. Cliff really likes that his work feels so rewarding, and he still has so much more to learn. Cliff says that he did make something to thank you, and hands over a Flower Ornament before heading back to the winery.

The item he give you isn't for wearing, but you can place it on the trophy shelf inside of your farmhouse or store it in your storage shelf.

Choice 2: "I've never thought about it." or "My opinion is still germinating." (-2000 LP)

Cliff apologizes for asking such a weird question. Cliff suggests that it's time to head back, as he wants to check back with Duke.

This event ends at 7:00 pm.

Blue Heart Event

Duke and Manna are talking about some sort of problem. Manna wants Duke to discuss it, but Duke doesn't want to. It turns out that Duke and Manna are both a bit worried about Cliff. Of course Manna is concerned, but it isn't something they should be sticking their noses into. You finally intervene to see what's going on. They tell you they weren't fighting, but they are having a disagreement.

Duke wants to ask your opinion on the matter, despite Manna's objections to getting you involved. Duke insists that he has the right to be worried about his family! He asks what you would say is Cliff's weakness.

Choice 1: He overthinks things (+3000 LP, +10 FP with Duke and Manna)

Duke is glad to see that you recognize that Cliff does have a weakness.

Choice 2: Cliff? No weaknesses detected. (-2000 LP, -10 FP with Duke and Manna)

Yea, Cliff is so closed-up that they can't get him to confide in them. This makes them a bit frustrated. It's good to celebrate a person's strength, but in turn you've to recognize their weaknesses too.

Cliff walks into the shop to tell his employers that he has finished work for the day. Duke thanks Cliff for his hard work, and then tells him that you're here to take Cliff out to a meal at the inn. Ah, is that why you are here?!

After eating, Cliff points out how delicious the meal was. Typically the inn's food is great, but for some reason today it's extra tasty. It must be because you were sharing the meal with him. Is it okay if he asks you a question? Before he entered the shop, were the three of you talking about him? He tends to eavesdrop, but he only caught a little bit of the conversation. He heard his name mentioned, and Duke was acting rather strange. Cliff wonders if he has done something to annoy Duke and Manna.

Choice 1: They're worried about you.

Cliff is now worried about his employment. There is still a lot to understand to do his job and hopes they don't think of him as unreliable. Cliff thanks you for letting him know. He vows to make a greater effort.

Choice 2: You're important to them.

Cliff wonders why they would care, as he isn't part of their family. Even though he thinks that might be too good to be true, it makes him happy.

Cliff thanks you for spending time with him. Feel free to invite him anytime!

This event ends at 9:00 pm.

Yellow Heart Event

Cliff is watching Popuri, Yu, and Mei play together in the plaza. You walk up to Cliff and surprise the poor guy. He apologizes for acting spooked, as he had been watching Popuri and the kids play together. Even though the kids aren't related, they still are very close. It's pretty amazing if you think about it.

You move behind Cliff and start pushing him towards the kids. They welcome the two of you to their play group, though Cliff tries to pass it off that he was simply walking by. Surprisingly, you agree with him! The playgroup continues to encourage you to join in. Popuri detects Cliff's hesitation and asks if there's a reason why he doesn't want to play with them. Cliff simply doesn't want to get in the way. Mei and Yu ask what he wants to play, so Cliff suggests a couple of games

Everyone head to the forest to play. First it's red-light-green-light (you moved!), and then hide-and-seek, and then a foot race. Everyone is having a blast playing together!

After everything is over and the kids leave, Cliff seems pretty cheery.

Choice 1: It's nice to see you smile. (+3000 LP)

Cliff blushes. He is very grateful that you pushed him forward. At first he was worried they wouldn't enjoy playing with someone like him, but it was a lot of fun.

Choice 2: You've got playmates now. (-2000 LP)

Ah yes, that is true. Cliff thanks you for pushing him forward. He really enjoyed today.

Orange Heart Event

Cliff enters the house and asks if this is a good time. He'd like to invite you to go foraging for wild items with him. Of course, if you're too busy you can decline his invitation. You accept his invite and the two of you head out.

You head to the the deeper part of the forest behind Mother's Lake. You both start looking around for wild goodies when Cliff calls you over to search a spot with him.

Afterwards, Cliff was impressed with your foraging abilities. You found a lot!

Choice 1: I'll let you have them all. (-2000 LP)

While he appreciates the offer, Cliff says he found plenty of his own. How about giving the extra to the villagers?

You return to the farmhouse after giving away your extras to the other townsfolks. Cliff notes how happy everyone was to receive the foraged items. He's happy too, as it isn't good to do things just for yourself. He's glad he chose to invite you to go with him today.

Choice 2: Let's offer them to the Goddess. (No FP/LP change)

The goddess? Well maybe, but you might have too much to offer. How about giving the extra to the villagers?

You return to the farmhouse after giving away your extras to the other townsfolks. Cliff notes how happy everyone was to receive the foraged items. He's happy too, as it isn't good to do things just for yourself. He's glad he chose to invite you to go with him today.

Choice 3: Let's give them to the townspeople. (+3000 LP)

That's a great idea! Cliff is worried if he would be bothering everyone if he just gave them stuff with no advance notice. He would be more comfortable if you would go with him. The two of you head off to give away the extra goods.

The last stop is at Duke and Manna's. They are thankful for the goods. Manna's usually too busy to go to the forest herself. After you leave, Cliff is glad to see how welcoming everyone was. He admits that he isn't used to initiating anything like this himself, but lately he's been changing bit by bit. Cliff is grateful that he invited you along with him today. When he's with you, he finally feels like he belongs somewhere.
