Taro not accepting gifts??

Hello! Long time farmer, first time poster.

Just started playing IoH, and following the guide here am trying to get the fishing rod. I already had gotten taro up to 1 just by talking every day, but then I read the guide and started trying to hand him grasses and material stone. He just responds “you don’t need to worry about me” and doesn’t accept the gift. Help!

I’m so confused lol. Is it ‘the thought that counts’? Is my game borked? I’m at spring 19, and I’ll keep trying until I get he rod. I’m just stumped. (And also on mobile Firefox and can’t for the life of me find the search function, so sorry if this has been answered)

In IoH and Sunshine Islands, players need to talk to a villager for about 5 days in a row before they'll accept gifts. Trying to give a gift during the warm up phase can sometimes make it longer before they'll finally take gifts. It's a weird mechanic that is only used in those two games.
