Fishing

Taro's old fishing pole

Fishing is an easy way to make money in the game, but unfortunately you don't start out with your own Fishing Rod. To obtain the pole, give Taro a gift each day until he reaches 2000 Friend Points. The next morning as you are leaving your house, the old man will have the Fishing Pole for you. The earliest you can get the pole is Spring 10 of your first year.

Taro likes the wild grasses that grow all over the island. Each one is worth 300 FP, and it should only take you about 10 days to get the free fishing pole from him. For players who have Mirabelle on the island, you can buy Fodder from her that is worth 500 FP when you give it to Taro.

To use the Fishing Rod, equip it on one of your 4 tool slots and then tap on the pole with your stylus, or use your DS button corresponding with the tool slot. When you see an exclamation point appear above your character's head, activate your Fishing Rod again. If you've timed it right, you'll pull up a Small Fish, Medium Fish, Large Fish, or some other junk item.

A map of the fishing spots

There are 6 different fishing locations:

  • Goddess Pond: You need to unlock the Forest before you can reach it. The pond is next to the church.
  • W.Town: The stream is just on the western side of W.Town, by the bridge leading to the Forest.
  • Farm: You can fish on your own farm on the western side of your crop field. This also includes the stream that runs down the west side of the Rice Paddy. You can't catch fish in the water where you plant rice.
  • Ocean: You can catch fish by casting from the beach or from the dock.
  • E.Town: There are 2 places that span this area; the eastern side of E.Town and the stream that runs down the western side of the Meadow.
  • Jungle: The fishing spot is in the northwest corner of the rural area.

Each season you will see different fish appear in the fishing spots. Some fish appear over multiple seasons, while others are season-specific. There are also special King Fish that you can rarely find, which are worth 100 Farm Degree points. You can catch multiple King Fish but you never get to keep them in your rucksack. Once you catch a King, you'll immediatly toss it back into the water.

A fish below 50 cm will be a Small Fish, between 50 cm to 1 meter is a Medium Fish, and anything larger than 1 m will be a Large Fish.
